The Lord is my Shepherd

Earlier this summer, we adapted a great idea that our neighbors told us about into our family routine. Apparently we get all our good ideas from our neighbors with 7 children. Makes sense - after all that practice, they should be a fountain of knowledge regarding child-rearing!

Their great idea was memorizing scripture as a family. This idea was reinforced at our church, River Valley Church, this past weekend. Our church is doing a sermon series on the Armor of God from Ephesians 6. This sermon series, called SUIT UP!, has changed my life forever. It has been incredible and I really encourage you to check it out on our church's website.

Anyway, back to the point. This summer we worked on having our kids memorize Psalm 23. It took them a couple weeks and they had it down. We were amazed at how fast and how thoroughly they could memorize these verses. It's been weeks since they memorized Psalm 23 and they still say it practically everyday to themselves.

Right now we are working on memorizing Ephesians 6:13-17. We also decided, after hearing last weekend's sermon, that we should memorize 1 verse each week with our kids that will help us to stand firm in Christ. We haven't decided with verse to start with yet, but we are considering a few, including Romans 15:15, Colossians 3:20, and Proverbs 12:19.

Several weeks ago we recorded Michael and Liliana saying Psalm 23. They are much better at it now - especially Liliana who can now say the entire thing without prompting, but this is just a sample. I would encourage you all to memorize scripture as well. It is a great family activity and a great way to draw closer to the Lord and be prepared for whatever He has for you!
